    Research Scientist/Engineer: Initiates the design, development, execution and implementation of technology research projects. Investigates the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions and products. Plans and executes applied research. Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories, and may contribute to scientific literature and conferences. May participate in development of patent applications. May coordinate interdepartmental activities and research efforts. 


    • Provide technical oversight to mass spectrometry R&D projects and New Product Introduction (NPI) efforts.
    • Provide technical management to scientists and other team members assigned to work on such projects.
    • Work closely with cross functional engineers and developers to ensure a path for adoption and productization of detection technologies.
    • Review trace detector designs for quality and adherence to design standards and system architectures.
    • Interact with various internal research groups to provide guidance, feedback, and ensure external efforts are well aligned with internal technology roadmap and plan.
    • Assist in identifying, attracting, hiring, and retaining the best talent suitable for ongoing projects.
    • Work closely with other technical leads and program managers to provide guidance and technical expertise on key activities centered on chemical detection.

    • Duties may be modified or assigned at any time to meet the needs of the business.



    • Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in chemistry, physics, or engineering.
    • Expertise in designing, assembling, prototyping, and troubleshooting custom built mass spectrometers.
    • At least 5 years of industrial experience focusing on mass spectrometry system design and prototyping.
    • Experience in technical leadership/mentoring with a minimum of 3 years serving as a technical team lead and prior experience leading externally funded contracts.
    • Demonstrated experience in product development with a proven track record of bringing concept designs to product and the ability to lead teams through this process.
    • Experience with vacuum chamber systems, electronics and associated diagnostic hardware (HV probe, oscilloscope etc.), mechanical design software (SolidWorks or similar), and CFD/ion flow modeling software. 
    • Ability to work with teams inside and outside engineering in a collaborative and productive fashion.
    • Proven track record of innovation through key products, patents, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
    • Experience writing and submitting government research proposals for product development funding.
    • Must be a U.S. Citizen, as required by our contract with the US Government.
