  • Overview

Rapiscan Systems is an industry leader in detection technology, providing cargo and vehicle inspection systems and services for ports, borders, military, high-threat facilities, and checkpoints to help customers combat terrorism, drug smuggling, illegal immigration, and trade fraud. We offer a broad array of scanning system configurations that leverage low-, medium-, and high-energy X-ray technology—or multiple X-ray technologies—to address each customer’s unique security application requirements. Our commitment to excellence in imaging performance, innovative design, and uncompromising quality ensures our solutions consistently deliver best-in-class imaging, high reliability, and operator satisfaction, to help customers find threats and contraband with ease and confidence.

The physicist will specifically work on the design, implementation and V&V of high-energy X-ray sources and detector assemblies for use in the Non-Intrusive Cargo and Vehicle Inspection industry. This is part of part of an expanding Science and Technology team to drive forward the R&D road map for the business.

Working alongside other physicists, software and electronics engineers they willl all bring innovative designs and concepts to market in a quick-turn around and fast-paced environment to help expand market share, whilst supporting legacy programs and existing schemes of work.

    Responsibilities

    • Report to the Technical Director and co-ordinate with other members of the S&T and engineering teams.
    • Develop tools and techniques to help anticipate system imaging performance for future units, analyse X-ray images on current units and identify faults/failures on existing systems.
    • Collaborate with linear accelerator and detector vendors to trial and test new modes of operation, configurations and designs for enhanced X-ray image performance capabilities.
    • Develop and maintain analytical models to predict detector response to X-ray illumination.
    • Explore operator assist tools using image analytics and deep learning techniques to identify suspicious items within X-ray images.
    • Support programs and projects to deliver fully compliant X-ray imaging systems at customer acceptance tests, both on site and at customer facilities world-wide.
    • Take an active role in the support of radiation exposure, leakage and safety aspects for the operation of new and existing linear accelerator platforms at the Rapiscan facility.
    • Develop and maintain analytical models to predict X-ray exposure to operators and members of the public.
    • Take responsibility for the design of X-ray based imaging systems for inspection of cargo and vehicles.
    • Undertake system-level design and underlying physics analysis including:-
      • Top down design of new projects in support of tender processes.
      • Bottom up design of new technologies from imaging basis.
      • Provision of image processing, data analysis and experimental work as required.
      • Build interactions with other global departments to encourage pull-through of new R&D.
      • Provide supervision of external University projects.

    As per company policy:

    • Uphold the company’s core values of Integrity, Innovation, Accountability, and Teamwork
    • Demonstrate behavior consistent with the company’s Code of Ethics and Conduct
    • It is the responsibility of every employee to report to their manager or a member of senior management any quality problems or defects in order for corrective action to be implemented and to avoid recurrence of the problem
    • Duties may be modified or assigned at any time to meet the needs of the business.

    Qualifications

    • A postgraduate degree (preferably PhD) in physics although graduates with relevant industrial experience will be considered.
    • Graduate/Postgraduate experience in radiation physics with experimental background.
    • Experience using Matlab for data analysis and C# for desktop application development.
    • The ability to work with others in a multi-disciplinary, fast-paced product development environment.
    • Willingness to support offsite (world wide) programs of work often at short notice.
    • Experience with programming in C++ to create Geant4 Monte Carlo models in Windows and Linux environments is highly desirable
    • Exposure to deep learning techniques for image classification would be advantagous.

OSI Systems, Inc. has three operating divisions: (a) Security, providing security and inspection systems, turnkey security screening solutions and related services; (b) Healthcare, providing patient monitoring, diagnostic cardiology and anesthesia systems; and (c) Optoelectronics and Manufacturing, providing specialized electronic components and electronic manufacturing services for original equipment manufacturers with applications in the defense, aerospace, medical and industrial markets, among others.
