    Rapiscan Systems, a wholly-owned subsidiary of OSI Systems, Inc. designs, manufactures and markets security and inspection systems worldwide. Our products are used to inspect baggage, cargo, people, vehicles and other objects for weapons, explosives, drugs and other contraband. Rapiscan Systems security and inspection devices can be found in a wide range of locations such as, airports, border crossings, railway stations, sea ports and terminals, government and military installations and nuclear facilities.

     

    Our Technology Team is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to aid in the design and development of state-of-the-art chemical and trace detection products. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be an active and contributing member of a world-class design team based in Andover, MA. As a member of the Mechanical Engineering team you will be responsible for the engineering and design of detection products, including machined/molded/sheet metal parts and assemblies, for the creation of detailed design and assembly drawing packages in a fast paced, interactive, cross-functional team environment. A strong focus and “can-do” attitude are essential.

    Responsibilities

    • Prepare mechanical product specifications as part of the NPI (New Product Introduction) process, R&D, and external contracts.
    • Explore new and existing materials and methods to solve design challenges.
    • Perform Finite Element Analysis (Structural, Thermal & Fluid).
    • Prototype designs using additive manufacturing technologies.
    • Prototype, assemble, test, analyze and approve new designs for release.
    • Engineer and design structural products/parts using machined components, injection molding and sheet metal forming.
    • Develop, maintain and communicate design plans, status updates, and schedules.
    • Responsible for delivering all mechanical design and engineering documentation aspects of the program, including: product/tooling costs, schedule attainment, mechanical product performance, and engineering change orders (ECOs).
    • Collaborate with suppliers and cross-functional development team to reduce time to market, product cost and procurement lead-time while meeting design objectives.
    • Drive product quality improvement and implement material cost saving projects through product redesign.
    • Provide sustaining engineering support for released products, including changes for improved manufacturability, reduced cost, increased reliability, and/or improved performance. Assists in the preparation and incorporation of ECOs

    Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master’s Degree preferred)
    • 5+ years of mechanical design experience, including:
      • Machined part design
      • Injection molded part design
      • Sheet metal part design
      • Die cast part design
      • Manufacturing and/or test fixture design
      • Electrical enclosures
      • Additive manufacturing
    • Thorough understanding of fundamental mechanical engineering principles
    • Strong engineering design skills and experience using Solidworks 3D solid modeling software
    • Proficiency with SolidWorks Structural, CFD/Flow, and Thermal Analysis tools
    • Demonstrated ability to tackle complex projects and problems with innovative and creative solutions.
    • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to communicate with scientists, electrical and mechanical engineers, suppliers, production, manufacturing engineers, quality and customers.
    • Ability to read and review mechanical drawings for proper dimensioning tolerances and completeness
    • Experience designing for ruggedization (i.e. IP67, drop/shock, etc.)

    • Must be able to lead change and process improvements
    • Experience utilizing Design of Experiments techniques
    • Knowledge of statistical data and tolerance analysis methods
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint
    • Proficiency with ergonomics and usability of deliverables
    • Team player with strong facilitation/interpersonal skills and a demonstrated commitment to continuous process improvement
    • Ability and desire for larger responsibilities/positions in engineering, including mentoring and /or leadership role
