Rapiscan is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Manager based in Torrance, CA. The individual has responsibility for coordinating the activities of the global Checkpoint Inspection Mechanical Engineering team with engineers based in Torrance, California, Hyderabad-India and Johor-Bahru – Malaysia and is responsible for designing scanning systems using a variety of detection techniques to detect nuclear materials, explosives, narcotics and other threats to homeland security.

The ideal candidate is an accomplished Engineer that is comfortable and enjoys being the Manager, while actively contributing to design activities as an individual contributor.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze product, equipment, performance specifications and requirements to determine designs which meet functional requirements and can be produced within target costs and schedules.
  • Direct and review all work performed by the global Mechanical Engineering team based in the US, Malaysia and India.
  • Collaborate with team members of other Engineering disciplines (i.e. Electrical, Software) and with team members from other functional areas (i.e. Product Line Management, Manufacturing, Service, Marketing) to clarify requirements, resolve problems, and develop designs.
  • Create solid models, detailed part drawings, assembly drawings, Bills of Materials, and specification documents, and document changes by proper ECO/ECN procedures.
  • Be an advocate for innovation by identifying new technologies and by promoting new ideas and concepts.
  • Ensure that product development practices in the global team follow Rapiscan Integrated Product Development Process (IPDP)
  • Provide technical leadership to the global mechanical engineering team to ensure highest level of reliability is built into product designs.
  • Take ownership of processes, standards, and documentation, including but not limited to :
    •  Drafting standards

    • Feasibility studies
    • Technical requirements
    • Design reviews
    • Technical risk analysis using FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)
    • Compliance testing

  • Work with suppliers and buyers to coordinate procurement of parts for engineering prototypes and first article production units.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in engineering design/project leader/mgmt roles in mechanical design.
  • 3+ years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Experience in designing products utilizing sheet metal, welded structures, and machined parts.
  • Experience in designing mechanisms utilizing common mechanical components such as gears, motors, bearings, plastics, sprockets, chains, etc. desired.
  • Experience in designing enclosures in support of mounting electronic hardware and cabling. Should be able to analyze power and cooling requirements.
  • Ability to use FEA software for thermal and structural analysis. Algor or Ansys experience also highly desirable.
  • Exposure to designing rugged and reliable products for fabrication and assembly.
  • Design with Autodesk Inventor and Solidworks (or similar tool); AutoCAD experience is highly desirable.
  • Thorough understanding of ASME Y14.5 drawing standard and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing.
  • Able to demonstrate practical experiences in design for manufacturing, design for testing, or design for reliability.
  • Full product development life cycle from requirements phase through transfer to production.
  • Ability to write technical reports and documents.
  • Must be able to travel internationally <5%.
  • Must be US Persons based on ITAR definition (US Citizen or Permanent Resident)**This position is expected to be exposed to information which is subject to US export control regulations, i.e. the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
